Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm not sure where to post it.

I'm having a difficult time making my own avatar, and the only ones I've come across in game are less than respectable.

Does anyone know where you can get avatars/skins (not sure the correct term) that are a little more conservative?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Jaye,

I wish I could help you, I've only been here a week or two myself. But my heart goes out to you, you are definitely not alone...!

Even not considering the skin issue, it's difficult to find anything outside of the bare-midriff, tight-fitting clothes. (I know, since I've looked around a great deal.) Some of this is based on the way that clothes are mapped onto the avatars, some of it's just because... well, human nature and all that.

I would like to see some more "normal" outfits circulating around SL, though, and am learning what I can to see if I can eventually make casual wear.

Anyhoo, good luck with your search.

(And I think you did come to a good forum to ask that question, as there are some very knowledgeable folks here with their pulsebeat on SL avatar and clothes design. If they can't help you, I'm not sure who could.)

I think it depends on exactly what you are looking for, and what you mean by "conservative". Firstly, if you're looking for actual skins, in other words those that change the entire appearance of your skin, you might as well give up entirely unless you are close friends with a designer or pay for a custom product, but LL gives us a good selection of tools to create our own skins and body shapes, and I have not been disappointed with these.

As for clothes to cover one's skin, which I believe was the original intent, though one might doubt that after a tour of Second Life... various options are available. There are many ordinary items of clothing out there for free, jeans, jackets, T-shirts and so on, but beyond that, you will have to pick a style and perhaps someone will be able to better inform you. I know of a few Victorian items (I dress in a style appropriate for a lady) but I would be hard pressed to inform you of any other market.

Incidentally, while it is time-consuming, it is not that hard to design one's own clothes, though personally I rarely bother, not being an instinctive couturier.

If you're looking for some classy clothes that don't show a lot of skin, try Little Rebel (check Jonquille Noir's Picks in her profile for a link -- she's the designer), or for dressy occasions try Nonna Hedges.

If you're looking for a skin without a lot of makeup and stuff . . . I have one from Chip Midnight that has none at all, and I'm crazy about it. It does, however, have naughty bits, so if that bothers you . . . I'm not sure where you'd get a skin without bits.

If you want a shape that is natural, without looking as if it's been dieting and filled with silicone, I might be able to help you -- drop me an IM inworld.

If the original poster wants a conservative outfit they will have their naughty bits covered up, so this should be irrelivant. I personally like Pixeldoll skins, and they come without naughty bits (250L for the skin, 100L for a naughty bits addon) I have a few of them, some with light makeup and natural lips tone.
There is conservative and elegant clothing available, you need to hunt around for it but that makes you more distinctive when you do find it.

This is one of the resons I decided to become furry. I don't look like a barbie in RL nor do I want to look like one in SL, so now I'm living my SL as a creature that doesn't even exist in RL! lol....I couldn't be happier. I'm not saying furry is the way to go, as it isn't for everyone and even furrys have their own naughty bits available....but I feel more conservative in my new blue skin, lol!

And as far as SL clothing goes, I have been trying to make clothing but everything maps right to the av just like second skin, so I really do not know if their is anything that can be done to get around this. In any case, check out the above suggestions, and aslo try www.slexchange.com and www.slboutique.com to save yourself time going place to place in world.

Feel free to IM me if you need anything! I'll be happy to help....

If anyone wants more conservative clothes or help in tailoring their avatar, please look me up in-game or IM me. If I am not in-game, I will get an email.

I have been working on a series of what I hope are appropriate and fermium clothing. I will be happy to give you some of the clothes in exchange for feed back on the design, quality and salability.

There are a fair number of clothing designers in SL that do make clothes that are 'not sexy', if that is what you have in mind. I have several very conservative traditional Japanese kimono's that I have purchased, as well as a number of pairs of slacks, t-shirts, and dresses that don't look 'questionable'.

Clothes with a loose, relaxed fit are almost impossible in SL. The way the avatar works, the clothes fit close to the body. Even a simple t-shirt looks like it's vaccuum fitted to the chest. The only way around that is to design clothes with prims, but that tends to look stiff and lifeless, and also adds a lot to your Avatar's complexity, and can cause lag and other problems.

Skins that don't have makeup are certainly out there. You just have to shop around.

If there's something in particular you want, ask me or just about any clothing designer. Most of us are open to new ideas and designs.

I am looking for a custom skin and have not found a designer that would do it. Americans are very strange on what they consider "sexy". I would punch anyone in the face that tried to trim or shave my "private" hair. Also what does nudity have to do with sexy?

Why do I can to conform to what an American considers sexy or proper? About the "conserative" skin, ah how about covering it up? I have a free women Gorean outfit that should do the trick for you! ;)

Greetings! I personally hate all the hoochie, pink colored, poorly made stuff that I see around, but hey, it takes all to make a world!!
Toast, Nylon, Indie, Pancake, myself and many others are young, and only make everyday wear clothes. Deal is we do not make it photosourced, we hand draw it all.
If you are looking for something more cartoony yet real, very very "daywear" but trendy and up to date, and of course "decent", there are TONS. It just takes a while to get around the game and discover them all.
Shameless plug but visit us at Deimos, I don't think you'd be disapointed unless you prefer ultra realistic. Toast and Nylon's skins also don't have private parts, and don't look naughty.
Good luck! :3

You forgot the qualifier "unless you want to look like you're wearing a sack. The "loose" slider on shirts looks terrible.

As I said in my previous post, IM either Toast or Nylon, or I can also make you one if you are not in a rush. :D
