How do i take an image in photoshop and then make the rest of the background disappear so that only the part i want displayed is there, so when i put the tex on an object the outline of the image i want stays. I hope that makes any sense. If some one could help me, or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks bunches, Wolfie

Let me try to clairify this: you want to remove the background from an image so that only one part shows and the rest is something else or transparant? Alrighty. First, select the part that you want to keep. The different lasso tools (especially the magnetic lasso) may be helpful. If there is lots of contrast, you may be able to use the magic wand tool. When using the magic want, selelct the image. Go to EDIT>COPY and copy the image. Then create a new file. Choose the default size settings, make the background transparant, and click OKAY. EDIT>PASTE the selected image into the new document. Next, you will want to save the file as a TGA (Targa) image. You will need to create an alpha channel. There are many tutorials for how to do this. The following contain sections on this: /109/7a/14378/1.htmlhttp://www.spacethinkdream.com/v_tutorials.phpI hope that this anwsers your question. If you need any more help, post a reply or send me an IM.

Thanks bunches, Wolfie See the attached pics for reference A. Take your original image. Select the parts you want to be invisible. (in this example, the white part surrounding the fish) Then pick SELECT>INVERSE to invert the selection. B Go to your channels pallete and make a new channel. You'll get a black alpha channel. Using your inverted selection, fill it with white. (If you want a see thru object you can fill it with grey) C. (optional) return to your original picture (the RGB channels) and color the part-to-be-invisible a similar color to the part you want visible. This helps prevent white edges. D. Flatten the image, save it as a .tga, upload and have fun let me know if I've oversimplified anything I see that while I was typing my answer Goshua beat me to it!

Thanks for the compliment Goshua, but I was working with Wolfgang in world and it seems that what works on my photoshop (CS) isn't working on his (version 7) He made the appropriate alpha channel and saved his images as 32 bit tga files, but when he uploaded them in preview, the transparent part isn't transparent. Is there some secret premultiply button in version 7 or something? What's going on? Thanks in advance to any replies.

Photoshop 7.0 has a problem. He needs to install the Photoshop 7.0.1 patch. If that patch doesn't work, it means that it's pirated and he needs to actually buy it if he wants to use it.

What it does is replace the 7.0 TGA DLL with the 6.0 one. Adobe got it into their heads to change the way transparencies work, which obviously screwed things up for everyone else. Thankfully, they came to their senses and released the patch.
