Default vs. planar mapping

SL offers a default or planar texture mapping options. Does anyone know what kind of texture mapping Default is? Spherical? Cylindrical? What would be the advantage, if any of using planar mapping, especially on flat prim faces?

The default mapping depends on the prim type. Look up Robin Sojourner's texture tutorial inworld (on her profile picks), it describes the mapping of each prim type.

For me, planar mapping comes quite handy once you start to torture prims (like the flattened 20m diameter tube/torus)
