I just noticed that sometimes pieces of a build are set to particular groups (depending on what group I have active during building).
What are the consequences of having a build set to a group? Any difference than having it set to None?

I think the land owner can set objects belonging to some group to stay, while everything else gets returned to the owner after some period of time.

That's basically it.
Before the better land object controls came into being, it was one of the ways that someone with, a mall for example, would be able to clean up the joint. Everyone that was supposed to have stuff out (they rented space) would set all their stuff "to group" (XYZ mall vendors group). Then, everyso often, an officer of that group could go into the land controls and return or delete all items not set to group automatically.
With the better controls, if you don't have too many folks using your land, enough you'd know looking at the list easily if their stuff belongs or not, you can simply return stuff by those that don't belong.
If you start renting space in malls, you'll become more familiar with this than you'd like to be, trust me! ;-D
Let's say you're on your own land, why use this? Well if you sent the return function on your land to 1 minute or something short like that, no one can come in and dump junk all over your house. Also helps clean out run away prims.
