Hey! I'm very new to making textures and read the guides on these boards, but need help recreating textures for some anime outfits. The outfits usually don't have much detail -- no wrinkles, fabric texture and minimal detail. I've made a few textures for an outfit (shirt, stockings and skirt) but they end up looking very flat due to the lack of texture and detail. I tried adding some shading but that ends up looking airbrushed and fake. It's hard to make a good looking anime outfit in SL since everything looks so realistic. Anyone have some pointers on what I could do to fix this? Here is a screenshot of the outfit I'm working on. The picture I used for reference is here but has an adult style to it, so you've been warned.

I assume you're trying to make clothing that looks like it's literally from anime, rather than looking like an RL copy of an anime outfit?
You might want to go to Nakama. There's at least one cell shaded outfit for sale there -- I've got a copy -- and it's very good; you might find it helpful to look at that and see how the designer did it. Off the top of my head, I can recall a few things about it that make it look like something from animation.
1. Try an outline on the outfit, something solid and black, like it was drawn with a pen. You can't truly outline your entire avatar, but you can outline outfit sections, or fabric edges.
2. Make any shadows very crisp. Just select an area in your graphics program and fill it.
3. A few wrinkles here and there won't necessarily hurt you. The outfit I got in Nakama has one or two, and they look great. They're done using thin black lines, and (I think) a bit of crisp shading.

Definitely go to Nakama and look around in Laundry, and also at the RenRen suits in Launa Fauna's area tucked in one of the Ayashii Ku back alleys. Hard-edged shading is your best friend here. ^^

Hard-edged shading is your best friend here. ^^ Yep, was just going to recommend the Laundry store. The outfits look like they're shaded with a lead pencil...and that effect looks fantastic in toony environments. It adds depth..without making them look photorealistic and therefore less cartoony. Here's me in Laundry shirt, tie and pants in the Nakama cutesy toon area: http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=83533The photo is a little too scaled down to do it justice..but I think it works well with the scene. Would like an anime skin/shape/eyes base but I'm still working on that. Edit: You can see the shading better here: http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=83532And my dear friend Twinkle messing about in a Laundry dress: http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=83743The shading really is pretty unique to SL, in my humble opinion.

XP Tan! Looking good, if you add shading I do agree that it should be hard-edged.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'm so pleased to wake up to so many replies I did find a cosplay photo of the outfit but it didn't help much since it looked like the outfit was made from nylon that was stretched very tight to avoid any wrinkles. I LOVE the hard shading look on those clothes from Nakama! I'm over there as soon as this is posted. I think that's exactly what I need to add some depth to my textures while keeping the anime style. On that note, does anyone have a good tutorial or guidelines for shading? I've never taken an art class in my life and have been finding it difficult to judge where exactly to shade. I looked around on the forums and Google but didn't see much. Thanks again! I'll be sure to post some updated pictures of the outfit!
