I have a white fringe problem - I just can't get rid of them. I'm using Photoshop 7.01 and whenever have transparent areas I get the white fringe in between. From googling I understand this is called matte and you should choose a matte (like you can for gifs) that matches your background colour.
However this doesn't really help when we have no background colour and we're dealing with targas anyway.
I've tried remove white matte but it doesn't seem to have an effect.
Is there a way of getting a really clean line? Other people don't seem to have the curse of the white fringe so it must be possible...

I use PSP8 and Selections/Matting/Remove White Matte usually works fine for me. You might try using some combination of that, Dematte and Selection/Modify/Contract.

Put a common colored background behind your object then save as normal. This works in PS. Don't know if it's the same it PSP.

PS 7.01 doesn't do alpha channels as such - it does the transparency in the RGB channels. I presume that adding a background would just not give me any transparency. Or - do you mean add the background as a separate layer and then just not save the layer? If so - does this work? (I obviously can't test it atm).

you might have trouble if you use the automatic transparency thing. alpha channels are your friend. i use alphas pretty much exclusively because alot of what i do needs that kind of control. it can be a real pain to make one from scratch but there's an easy way. hopefully i can make this clear. when you get your image how you like it and have all your transparent areas setup and your opaque areas, hold down control and shift and click each layer in the layer palette that you want to be opaque. in other words control-shift-click each layer with non transparent stuff in it. that will select them. then go to the channels palette and at the very bottom click the button that looks like a circle in a square. bingo you got an instant alpha channel. now the important part...... go back into your layers and make a new layer at the bottom and fill it with the same color as your edges. if you're making a black shirt then make the bottom layer black. your image won't look transparent anymore but the alpha channel will make it transparent and the best part is the edges will be cut out of that bottom color layer so they will match the edges of your art work. umm forgot to mention this is photoshop. i dunno anything about psp sorry. ok that might not be very clear. if it still doesn't work for you i'll write it up nice and neat with some pics and examples.

Good job Zuzi. I was going to try to explain all that. I'm glad you did though.
