While I understand that Linden Labs does not really support 3rd party programs, I would be curious if there is a program out there that allows you to paint on a body live. This is so that i can make sure my skins are seamless despite the textures I might add to an otherwise solid colored skin.
I did see something called Tattoo but it was not compatible with my video card. Erf.

From: Kira Zobel I greatly recommend AvPainter, I believe it's on Slexchange, that's where I got it. Well that was a waste of 10USD. Sadly AvPainter installed and then crashed when I tried to run it (Windows did not give me any info on what kind of error it was) and then I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. Upon reinstallation it crashed again. Got to try something else. I wonder if there is anything Linux compatible.......

AvPainter is great, but it does require you to update quite a bit. Also, note that while I thought my Direct X was up to date, after installing the other things (.NET and XNA) you need to run a Direct X updater again, or AvPainter will crash. The program is worth the trouble. From SLX: Requirements ------------------ AvPainter is built using Microsoft's .NET 2.0 and XNA technology, which is currently only supported on Windows XP SP2. Before you attempt to install or run AvPainter, make sure you have the following installed. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=enMicrosoft XNA Framework (~2Mb download) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7da4763-6807-4bd5-8d18-18c60c437f93&DisplayLang=enAfter installing the XNA Framework, it's important to update your DirectX installation: Microsoft DirectX Oct 2006 or later (web update) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Thats fine. It just doesnt solve my problem of finding the program that wont have a problem with my vid card. Kat

In the long run it is better to simply Get a new video card if you have a desktop.

This probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but in my opinion, no 3D painter currently on the market is worth the bother. None of them are very powerful, not even the high end commercial ones, and all of them are riddled with bugs and functionality glitches.
Well, I shouldn't say "no" 3D painter, I guess, since I haven't tried Zbrush 3 yet. The demo video did look promising. I'll get around to playing with it one of these days. It's not exactly a stand alone painter though (lots of other features), so maybe it doesn't quite fit the description of what you were asking about anyway.
What I would recommend is Photoshop CS3 Extended, if you can afford it. It allows you to import 3D models right into Photoshop for texturing. That way, you get the best of both worlds: all of Photoshop's tools (which no 3D painter even comes close to offering), and the 3D model right in front of you on which to see the results. You can't paint directly on the model (yet), unfortunately, but you can paint on the template and see the results on the model almost in real time. The model will update every time you save. So if you want to mess with a tricky seam or something, just save every time you make a minor correction.
Another option, if you're a 3DS Max user, is Ghostpainter. I've never used it myself, but Chip Midnight raves about it. It creates a bridge between Max and Photoshop, so that you can paint your texture in PS, and see the results on the model in Max. My guess is PS CS3E is going to make Ghostpainter obsolete, but if you have an older version of Photoshop and you also have Max, it's a good option.
I hope that was helpful. I know it wasn't quite what you were asking for.

I agree too. Personally I was a bit taken aback by the simple solution of getting a new machine. I mean, just for the sake of running the one program that I want to run but cant due to incompatibility? Even if I had the money to just up and buy a new computer I dont believe in the concept of "you need a new one" being the default solution to everything. Either way, CS3 Extended is not on my list as I already have CS and it does what I want in relation to my graphic arts hobby/interest/career. Until there is another solution like AvPainter but more compatible with more video card types, than it will just continue to be a ong process. Hehehe.
