Ive tried making my own hair texture but the whole image turns alpha, is there some way to create a fringe without making the whole texure alpha?

An image (texture) is either 24-bit or 32-bit in SL. It can't be both at the same time. If the texture file you created and uploaded has an alpha channel, then it is 32-bit .... all over. It's not just the semi-transparent edge that has an alpha channel. The whole thing does. It's just that the opaque parts have zero transparency. (See Robin Wood's excellent and easy-to-follow tutorial if you don't understand how alpha channels work -- http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLTutSet.html ).Now, if you are creating hair, you will have multiple prims. You don't need to apply the same texture to all of them. Try using the texture with an alpha channel in it sparingly -- on only a few strategically-chosen prims -- and using a 24-bit version of the texture for the rest. That way, you'll have fewer partially-transparent prims overlapping each other and potentially creating a sorting problem.
