Can anyone tell me a way to find out where our avatar's eyelashes are on the templates? Apparently I'm coloring over them and getting some funky skin colored eyelashes.

I would also like to know if anyone has found a way to crunch the skin TGA files a little more than photoshop does by default. My face texture is running 3 Mb's and it takes forever to rez on most people's systems, especially in crowded hi lag places like clubs.

The eyelash color comes from somewhere in the outer areas of the face, ears, etc on the face template.

As for reducing the file size, I don't know about that.

I believe it's in the upper right hand corner of the face template. There's a little box there that appears to be for eyelashes from what I've seen.

You will find your eyalash template from these 2 files in the SecondLife/Character folder of your install:

head_alpha.tga, head_color.tga

It sounds like your resolution is too high. A 512 x 512 32bit TGA should be exactly 1 MB, not 3. If it's 24 bit, it should be 768k.

PSD's, TIFF's, etc. will always be larger because of layering, but a TGA with only one layer should be exact. Make sure your image size is 512 x 512.

Thanks all,

I did a bit of research last night myself and came up with what you guys already said (I should check back more often lol)

The eyelashes are indeed at the top right of the face template, but they were still coming up all white until I realized there was no alpha channel on the template when I uploaded it. Making sure that corner of the template was blank (transparent) and making sure there was an alpha channel fixed the problem.

As far as the TGA compression goes, I didnt learn until late last night that SL compresses all uploaded pics to JPG2000 format, so it would seem it doesnt matter what the upload resolution is to begin with.

But I found that not to be the case.

I have a female upper body template in both 512x512 and 1024x1024 format. The larger one obviously has better detail. After uploading both I noticed a significant increase in detail (especially around the nipple area) on the larger of the 2, and it doesnt take any longer to rez after uploading.

Just some things I've found :)
Thanks to all for your help!

On the "forever to rez" deal, I was using a friend to help me model the texture. She was in appearances mode and it never seemed to rez fully for us. On a whim i had her save the skin texture & get out of appearances mode & it rez'd in quickly after that. Just another tidbit of useless info lol

Most likely, the reason you are not noticing a difference in rez time is because the images are already in your cache from when you uploaded them. To other people though, the larger image will absolutely take longer to rez. Trust me.

Also, the fact that SL internally comresses the images is irrelevant. A large image is a;ways larger than a small image, compressed or not compressed. An image at 1024 x 1024 has 4 times the information in it than does one at 512 x 512, meaning it takes that much longer to uncompress for display.

Stick with 512. There is more than enough detail to work with at that size. I don't mind saying that I make some of the most realistically detailed avs in the entire game, and all my images are 512. There is never a reason to go bigger.
