Hello Everyone,

I'm slowly beginning to acquire a bunch of textures to be used in my creations. I've found some texture organizers ingame that would help to organize/view my textures so that I don't need to open my inventory and scan through them manually. One of them is a Hud type organizer and the others are display type organizers that can be accessed by owner/group. They do have tile features as well zoom.

Each vary in cost.

I'd love to have some recommendations by those that use organizers.
Btw....I'm not looking for a texure vendor. Just an organizer that would make life easier for me. ;)

Thanks! =)

Adriana Caligari has a free one that i use (over and over) lol, it's great, i just make one for each type of texture, brick, wall paper, fabric, etc. It's simple, easy to use, accessible to everyone, and it's defindtly made my designing/building second-life alot easier :)

I use (lots) of the THINc ones. I splashed out and bought the copiable version.

It's got it's annoyances (it gives me the damn notecard of instructions every time on rez, grr) but it does a great job otherwise, good enough I've not even bothered to script one for myself that would do it *precisely* as I'd like.

I've also used a trial stage of a HUD one, I was mentoring the person building it for the scripting. That also worked nicely at the end of the day. In some ways it's nicer, doesn't chew prims, but I don't like HUDs as large as it had to be to work for texture display, a purely personal thing.

where to buy organizers...

A couple off the top of my head are Cortex and K.R. Engineering by Kirsten Rutlidge(sp?). I believe both offer a choice of HUD or actual organizer. I like the greater choices you get with K.R. Engineering has but have been using the Cortex version for a few months now.

I love mine, I use the prim version and have the copiable so I can make a new organizer for each category. Cortex does not give you the option to make categories in the organizer itself like Kirstens do. Then again if you have a category with 1000 textures you dont want it to share with another category, lag will kill you waiting to see the textures if you pack them too full.

I would like to hear some input about the hud version. I hate having to eat up 30 prims for each organizer I put out just to organize my files.

Memnochs Madness has one too. I just picked it up today to compare with the others I've tried. :)

Thank you all for the recommendations and responses! :)

I finally broke down and bought the K.R. Engineering texture organizer. I initially wanted the HUD one but accidently bought the stand alone organizer instead. Shopping during the early morning hours made my eyes cross :p After cussing at myself I realized I made the right choice since my girl friend can help me texture our new place.

The initial setup -- getting the textures in was a tad bit confusing for noob like me. Once I got the hang of it ...it was a breeze. Now I need to organize/categorize my textures.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but does this thread still represent state-of-the-art in texture organizers? I now have a three of the free HUDs from TRU all filled, and I think I'd like to trade it in for a better one before I make more!

YATO (stands for Yet Another Texture Organizer) is a freebie available (last I checked) at the Freebie Bazaar in Stillman. Very easy to use, don't even have to have the textures in the organizer itself. It's all done with notecards that another scripted item writes for you. (well you have to cut and paste from chat history......)

I don't know who the maker is.

I love love love the Lestat's one. After researching the forums, asking people for their opinions, searching the grid and slex, I decided on Lestat's and dont have any complaints (well, maybe that it doesn't make the categories for me, and put the textures in the appropriate categories too hehe). I have the 50 category version, its also available in smaller (cheaper and less prim heavy) versions.

It lets me move items/pages/categories around if I change my mind on where things go.
It displays 16 textures in thumbnail view (also has single and tiled views)
It lets you choose to copy a single texture to your inventory, or a folder of the category all at once.
I can set it to group access for my freebie one (I have different ones set up for different purposes)
It comes with a hud version (which I havent used yet)
You can copy/move from organizer to organizer, as well as category to category.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit. :)

QFT! I love Lestats. I bought a 20 folder one for my everyday textures, and a 10 folder one just for fabrics, and that probably wasn't enough!...lol I really like that you get the prim organizer and a HUD with each one you buy. Once I got them all organized, it's easy now to just open a pack of textures when I get them and sort them into both the prim and HUD versions. It only takes a few minutes to copy a whole load of textures into them, and they're just as easy to retrieve.

i just dumped them all into a square box with a simple script that alternates textures after a time and whenever i build i rez that so i have a feel for what all the textures are that i have in my inventory. so i LEARN them by name. Naturally, all my textres are properly filed in folders. So in the end i know WHAT my textures are and how to find them quickly. AND i keep an extra inventory window open and ON textures when i build. Lil trix like that have helped a lot. with out buyin anything.

A quick question on these huds...once you've dropped your texture into them, do you have to keep the texture in your inventory?

I use K.R.'s texture organizer. I load the textures in it and delete them out of my inventory.

When you find the texture you want you just retrieve it from the the organizer so you only have that texture in your inventory. When I'm building I'll usually start a folder and name it what I'm building then put all the textures I use or might use in there until the project is completed. After the project is completed I just delete the textures out of my inventory again.

You don't have to worry about losing the texture as long as you stored it in the organizer because it will alway be there unless you tell the organizer to delete it.

Hope that helps. :)

No. And, if you have a copiable one, just copying the filled organizer provides a quick backup that you can even put in a prim on your property. However, unlike textures themselves, organizers are not usually transferable.

Freebie
02-23-2008 23:33
Textures R Us had one made as a freebie.
Its a HUD version with a large screen for viewing thumnails and u simply drag them in from your inventory via edit.
There " is " a small annoyance.
I added some "samples" of txtrs around 30 and because the HUD is no modify set by the creator these samples that were added cant be removed.
Textures you add can be deleted by a button and to extract one just press another button called "copy" and it pops up on your screen
There is also a search facility too.

Its free and available at Textures R Us - English Rose in boxes around the store.

:)

I use the Texture Assistant Pro, but it is one you rezz in-world. Not sure if there is a HUD version to categories such as egyptian, middle ages builds, stone/rock, asian, walls, etc. I can add the same texture to multiple vendors so can always find what I am looking for...but it does take some time to organize if you have a ton of textures to begin with.

hippoIMAGE from HippoTech is a nice organizer that allows you share copies. It also comes with the option to restrict sharing, to respect copyright. You rez it inworld. It comes in several different sizes, from2x2 to much larger.

I use this to show prospective custom build clients the different textures for their selection. They can zoom, browse, but not get copies of my textures.

Glad I searched before asking a dumb question...ok maybe, maybe not so dumb. Sorry for dragging this back up, but I have the YATO Texture Organizer. I've been playing around with it, the instructions are wonderful for loading the textures in, but how do I get them out and apply them to my builds?
