I have seen some tutorials and examples of how to make shirts and pants etc. But I have not seen anything in the way of shoes. Has anyone any pointers or tips on getting started and are there any sample templates around.

My advice for learning to do shoes is to invest in some sedatives and make sure you don't have any pointy things within arms reach. After a few minutes of trying to figure out the foot template you'll want to stab yourself in the eyes.

The avatars' feet are really just... heh. If I were in charge of the Lindens, I would seriously think about adding an entirely seperate foot mesh/UV map and just forgetting about the current one.

A few people have made pretty cool shoes out of prims. You might consider forgetting about texturing altoegether and just going that route. Unfortunately, heel height and foot arch are linked, so you have to be tricky about it when making shoes out of prims.

If I were in charge of the Lindens, I'd find out who made that foot shape, and use various impliments to make their feet look like that in rl...

Then I'd cut off the toes and sell them to Lynn Lippman at L$200,000 each.

Shoes......(twitch).....straps around ankles.....(twitch).......brain in danger.....

Keep it solid around the ankles if you can... Boots and runners are usually easy..slip on style heels are ok too.. get into lots of straps or open sides/toe/whatever and unless your right on the money then your goign to be off.

Doesn't help that the top left of the shoe template is right at the side of the canvas and kinda crowded in..

Oh and beware of the back of the heels..

*runs of in his jacket that does up in the back*

Needing shoes? Think of Viola Bach, SL's premier shoe maker.

The foot template, like all the templates, just takes some getting used to. Sure, it could be better, but so could all of them. They each have their little quirks.

Anyway to become a master cobler, I suggest drawng a grid across the foot portions of the template using several diffferently colored lines. Upload this as a texture, and you will see how the template falls onto an avatar. From there, it's not hard to see how to distort your shoe images to match. Just notice how the straight lines bend when applied to the av, and distort your images oppositely.

Your first attempts will probably take you quite a few uploads to get right, but through that process you will learn what works and what doesn't. Once you get used to it, making shoes should be no harder than making anything else. Good luck, and have fun.

Thanks Pit, the cheque's in the post! :D

Bobby,

Shoes aren't really all that difficult, it just needs a bit more practice (and lots more $L's in uploads) to get the hang of it, as the template does distort a bit more on the feet than on other parts of the body (especially around the heel).

Chosen's suggestion of using a colour grid is an excellent idea, and I already have a couple loaded as textures, so IM me in game if you'd like to have a look at them.

One other tip that I learned the hard way was to avoid certain designs which require drawing over the more distorted areas of the foot. Mules, for example, are relatively easy and a good place to start (as well as being my favourite type of shoe anyway!) If you want to see what I mean, have a look at my designs in Milano Fashions in Tan and Briana's Galleria.
