I've been trying to create this in Photoshop to no avail. Basically, a good fur/feather ruff texture. Straight and curly,an alpha texture for making crests, ruffs of fur and such with soft gradients. Sort of what one would use to make a fur coat's sleeves that are actually fluffy-looking. :)

Anyone ever release full-perm textures like that? :)

Did you try the squid (www.turbosquid.com)? Squid has some nice fur texxies.

Here's a pretty good, simple fur tutorial:

Also, if you google "fur texture" you can find some pretty good free ones. You'll have to play with them to get them to tile in most cases, but that's not hard if you know how (offset 50% horiszontally & vertically, and clone stamp out the seam).

Finally, if you've got a digital camera and a dog, don't be afraid to let Rover play model. Pick a choice section of his coat and snap away. Fur coats and stuffed animals work great too. Just make sure you use good lighting.
