It makes alpha channels very quickly and very nicely. I think novices especially will find it very nice.

I don't do much texturing but I love Paint.net. There are a huge number of effects plug-ins for it and the best part is, it's all free.

The one glaring shortcomming (and this assumes i didn't simply overlook it) is some form of "guide" overlay.

Not sure what you mean. What would a guide overlay do?

I think she means the kind of translucent red overlay you get when you have the alpha channel visibility turned on in PS at the same time as the RGB channels or when you have the mask overlay turned on in PSP. I haven't played with paint.net enough to know if it can do that or not, but if it can't, then yeah, I'd call that an unfortunate limitation.

For what it's worth though, I think paint.net has tremendous potential. I'd love to see it evolve to supplant GIMP as the predominant open source image editor. Paint.net appears to be a much more sensible program than GIMP, from what I've seen of it.

I downloaded it to give it a try. It's pretty easy to understand and will save to TGA. But apparently it won't open Photoshop files. So Chip Midnight's templates won't open for me.

Thought it might be good to make textures then use my regular graphics program (the GIMP) to design them for clothes. I'm going to play with more. Thanks for the information..........the more the merrier as far as free graphics programs are concerned . :)
