Anyone know where I can buy textures with common words for use as buttons on HUDs or to make signs? Apparently they could be made easy, but my head is exploding at the moment learning to script as it is

Signs and buttons are easy enough, no scripting required. Just make them in ANY paint or draw program, save them as 'jpg' and upload them into SL as 'textures'. THen drop the uploaded sign/texture onto your button shaped prim.

llSetText does work well for huds and is more flexible in some ways. The hover text in a hud is more reliably placed. I can remember which forum had a discussion on this. You essentially set the hover text in a lower prim than your target prim.

Another option, which will save on the upload also, is to make one large .jpg with all the words on it and using creative texture placement, show only one word per button.
I have a fun little avatar that's all boxes. It's the "newbie avatar" which has different boxes for different areas of the body. The texture on it is your standard plywood with the words "Newbie Leg", "Newbie Head", "Newbie Body" etc on the boxes. One texture upload got all the words for 9 different parts. (it's partly to make fun of the SL elders who make fun of noobs wearing boxes on their heads)

If it's for a HUD, another option is to use an extra invisible prim with an llSetText script in it to display the text.

Yes I am already using llSetText for the display, I plan to use rotating square bars for each button to give 4 faces options per button, but having near 20 buttons, llSetText is not going to be an option for all of them. And they won't need to change labels other than 4 options
