Hi, all!!

I'm working on a greek inspired project and have been given the task of making Caryatids (marble looking mural based on people). What I am trying to do is take pictures of avatars and turn them in to marble. I have both paint shop pro 7 and photoshop 7. I thought to turn the avatar cutout into grayscale but not sure how to get a marble effect from there. Is there a way to apply a texture over top while still keeping shadowing of the body and some facial features?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks :)

A pretty good way to do this is in Photoshop is to go to the channels palette and view each channel individually, one by one. Pick the one that has the most contrast and duplicate it. Then turn off visibility on the duplicate and turn RGB back on. Now go to the layers palette, make a new layer, and paint it whatever color or texture you want. Go filter -> render -> lighting effects, pick a light you like, and assign your duplicate channel to the light's texture channel (do this by selecting the channel by name from the pull down menu on the lower right of the lighting effects dialog). This will turn the channel into a bump map for the lighting.

Here's one I did real quick while I was writing this. It's not exactly the marble look you were going for, more metalic, and a bit rough, but that's only because I did it so quick (literally 10 seconds). With proper cleaning of the image before applying the lighting, and proper texturing, it could have looked like marble or plastic or granite or wood or whatever. It should be enough to demonstrate the power of the technique though. Play around with the variables a bit and you'll get the look you want.

By the way, be sure to delete the duplicate channel before you upload to SL.

Make your murel the way you wish it including the background...then to up to Effects..Texture Effects and Sculpture..from there you can play to get many stone like effects..also try a blurr.. soften for a softer effect ...good luck and happy gaming .. Alix
