Sim Texture Problem

Is there anyone really good with texturing that can possibly help me?
All I'm after is the simple default Linden grass from the basic texture folder, and the estate owner has uploaded it for me but it is so blurry that it looks simply awful. She's uploaded all kinds of sizes to no avail, and I'm starting to get a headache looking at all of the blur.

I rezzed a simply cube, flattened it, stretched it, and dragged the same texture from my folder onto it and it looks just fine, but I can't figure out why the entire sim is blurry if we're both using the same texture.

Does anyone have any clue why this is happening?
I'm available in game if someone would like to drop by and see it. It's just awful and I believe that someone with experience would be able to talk her through what needs to be done.

Thanks in advance for any help.

CTRL-P, Graphics tab

Check the custom box if it isn't already, and see what the terrain slider is set to. If it's to the left, move it all the way to the right. This may fix it.

ETA:: (That's the terrain detail slider. Changes the visible geometry of the land to reduce graphics strain. Also changes the texture to look like crap)

My settings are fine. As I said, I rezzed the texture onto a prim and enlarged it, and it shows normal and clear.

That prim is not terrain. Is most terrain texture fine? If so, THEN your settings are fine. The terrain slider has nothing to do with prims.

Terrain everywhere is normal but on this sim. My graphics settings have always been max, and the texture she had before this one was fine, but disagreeable to me because it was flowery. It was only when she uploaded the default grass that there has been a problem. It simply remains blurry no matter what she does.

Thank you, now your settings are fine ;) (Still good to check now and again btw. SL doesn't like constants)

Anywho... generally I do avoid the Linden grass texture because it's not exactly well-detailed. To me it's kinda a blur anyway...

Perhaps try a different texture? If this one isn't working, then it seems maybe a different one is needed.

That's about all the help I can offer, sowwy

Littlewolf, I'm confused as to why the texture was uploaded by the estate owner. It's freely available in your library. If the estate owner downloaded it and then uploaded it again, then it's no longer the same texture.

In any case, applying a texture to a prim isn't necessarily the best way to judge whether or not it will be clear on terrain. First, the texture will always be stretched vertically by height differences in the terrain that could never be present on a prim. Second, ground textures repeat once every 12 meters, and since the max size of (normal) prim is 10 meters, you can't see the full texture at full magnification on a prim.

Further, even if you do manage to overcome all that, once a texture has been applied to the ground, it's not really quite the same anyway. It gets blended with whatever other three textures are in the terrain settings, depending on the height of each patch of land.

And as for the different sizes you say the estate owner has tried, that is a waste of time. The blended land texture will always come out to 512x512. If you put a smaller texture on the ground, it will get upsized, and the results won't be pretty. If you go with a larger one, it will get downsized.

One thing you didn't mention is whether or not this estate owner person is also seeing the texture on the ground as blurry, or if it's just you. If it's only on your end, then I suspect that for whatever reason, the blended land texture is failing to load properly for you. Try clearing your cache and relogging.

If you're both seeing it, then something is either wrong with the texture itself, or wrong with how the region is blending the four land textures. Ask the estate owner to restart the sim, in case it's the latter.

In any case, I do agree with Keira that the Linden grass textures are not very good. Got a camera? Go take a down-looking picture of your front lawn. Clean it up in Photoshop to make it tile seemlessly, size it properly, and then upload it and apply it to the ground. You'll find that it looks much better than the Linden grass.

Based on a recent in-world test, if you try loading a terrain texture that is larger than 512 x 512 as one of the 4 terrain textures for a sim, it simply refuses to accept that texture, and tells you the texture file should be a 24-bit tga file at 512 x 512 resolution.

The terrain textures in the library contain two resolutions for most of them. There is the detailed 512 x 512 version, and then there is a "base" version that is a low-resolution 256 x 256 variation. Today, one should avoid using any of the Linden terrain textures that say "base" in their name. The current version of SL does not need or use those 'base' textures. They are an artifact of an older system where we loaded eight textures for sim terrain - 4 low-rez versions and 4 higher-rez versions. The current client and server software calculates the low-rez version from the 512 x 512 version that we upload.

Try this texture for your grass: Library > Textures > Terrain Textures > Terrain Textures NW Coastal > NW Coastal - Grass - Lawn
