Will SL ever have static textures?

Anyone here ever played Doom? Remember the mountains outside?

Well, no matter how far you walked, they never grew bigger. They were static textures - they didn't rotate along with you, they didn't grow larger or smaller when you walk up or away of them.

And guess what. This would be brilliant for Second Life. You see countless "panorama" screens that just scream "FAAAAKE" but so many games use the system of static textures that remain the same no matter the angle or the distance. This would help for sooo many things.

So if a 15 year old game can implement it so it runs on a 386, why can't Second Life? It can't be that hard to add, can it?

Icarus, someone left an interesting anti-hotlink replacement image there for you =)

There is something like this built into SL for the skies, but really not user accessible. Maybe more possibilities will open up as Windlight evolves though.

Bah, and I thought i tested that image to see if it would work :P

And yes, SL uses it for the sky so the engine is capable of it - it would be a huge help to people if it worked for any textures too! Other 3D engines (including that of IMVU, a competitor) is capable of this, so I'm a bit surprised SL doesn't allow it.
