I'm working on a unisex recreation of an extant medieval tunic from 1100. As part of this, I have a system/mesh skirt layer, and prim skirt parts, as many clothing designers do. Unusually, some of these combos are suitable for men (men and women both wore skirts in this time period.) The trouble is that there are holes in the system skirt when worn by a male shape. There's a large swath across the kidneys, and spot holes on the sides of the thighs. I am greatly puzzled, and many searches in the forums have not turned up any other discussion of this problem. Is it familiar to any of you? Is there a solution? -- Vandeverre's Emporium, Caledon II, 196, 101, 22 Victorian and Medieval Revival clothes, furnishings, and many other things!

how about an additional layer on the pants or underpants layer to cover up when the mesh breaks?
even on female shapes, the system skirts can show some undesired skin when walking, so i always include a pair of "glitch pants" in any outfit thet uses mesh skirts.

In some cases it's also possible to use pants as the basis for the prim skirt (make sure the prim parts overlap enough for that). That is what I do in some of my women's dresses and all of my crossdresser dresses.
If you really want a mesh skirt basis, do what Moire says, a pant layer and a skirt layer.

Yes, those would definitely work, thank you!
Does anyone know why it breaks? Should I report it as a bug?

I've had that problem, mainly in the back. I used underpants and undershirt to address it, but it's not a perfect solution. It's anomalous, so I'd classify it as a bug. I've gotten in the habit of using an alpha gradient at the top of the skirt so the seam is less noticeable. I sometimes adjust my shape to get the joint closer, but it's probably not an option to tell customers to forsake the typical wasp-waisted-apeman shape just to wear a clothing item

I imagine the alpha gradient helps with that odd gap between the skirt waistband and the avatar body, as well? (CV ponders this fascinating idea...)

I noticed the same problem with my merman avie several months ago. If it's a bug, it's not a new one.
[Which reminds me to drag it out and wear it sometime!]

I remember reading a blog over a year ago about the skirt not being exactly great and some lindens wanting to try and address it but it was low priority so yes do what the rest do improvise its been that way as long as I've been here

Hi!
The skirt doesn't "break". The mesh dives beneath the body mesh at that point, for male avatars only. (Females keep a noticeable gap all around the skirt.)
It's not a bug, just poorly made. It's always been that way, and as far as anyone can tell, that's the way it was intended to be.
And yeah, glitch pants will fix it, or you can make the shirt into a jacket that will extend below the waist on the AV. (That leaves the underpants and pants layers for your trews etc.)

Thank you!
The jacket idea is one I hadn't considered, and since it's not likely someone would want a "jacket" over this outfit, could be one of the options. (Pleased pondering proceeds.)

as a crossdresser in RL and SL i've often noticed that skirts intended for female shapes usually leave noticeable gaps and don't cover over my male bum...i'd suggest just making the skirt slightly looser and then bustling it a bit so it fits over the male waist. pants and prim skirt seem the best option most of the time though x

I'm finding this issue to be extremely annoying at the moment. I'm trying to make a "long shirt" that goes almost to the crotch and decided a short skirt might be the best solution to extend it (a jacket would not work because you can't completely close the front). A belt would hide any seam between the shirt and skirt. But no...it just doesn't work because system skirts REALLY suck on the male shape. And bustle is just not an option for this...it needs to be close to the shape of the body.
The only way to fix it seems to be to give the guy a huge rear end. And that isn't acceptable either.
And by the way...what is up with the horribly jaggy way the slits look? It's a completely unusable feature!
