So tonight I plan on doing my first texturing test by trying to make a shirt for my Avatar. My question is this.. so I have the templates, and make a texture.. what file types does SL let me upload? jpg, gif, bmp, png??
once I upload my texture.. then what?? where does it show up and how do I get it onto my Avatar.. Sorry these are all BASIC questions but I'm a newbie and haven't seen any Beginner classes in SL.
Any help is appreciated.

There's a difference between "What will SL let me upload?" and "What format should I use?" I actually am not 100% certain of the first without looking it up, but I suspect you are most interested in the second. The answer: Targa (TGA). I'd also recommend a step before spending L$10 to upload -- preview first. After you select "Upload Image" and pick your texture, you'll get a confirmation dialogue. There's a little note on there to "Preview as:" followed by a pull-down menu.* The default is to "display as texture" and you can choose to display it as pretty much any body/clothing part. It's well worth taking a moment to do. *Going from memory, which is faulty, but this should be close enough to let you find it if I'm wrong in some detail. As for the "What next?" it's pretty simple. You can open Appearance and click onto the clothing item you want to make or customise, in this case a shirt. Drag the texture from your inventory onto the box labeled "Fabric", or click on that box and pick using the menu provided -- either way yields the same result. Good luck and happy designing

Thanks for your reply Meilian,
The Preview thing you suggested really made the tweaking go as it should. I was afraid I'd have to pay L$10 everytime I made a tweak. Now that' I've done it.. I think going forward from here should be fun and easy.
Thanks Again!

Welcome to the wonderful- and highly addictive world of SL designing, Dirk! SL allows uploads of jpg, bmp & tga formats. You'll want tga format for most clothing as that format supports alpha channels. Good Luck!

And here's another tip: if ya can, here's another kind of Preview... look out out for testing Preview Grids between general releases of SL, 'cuz L$ is truely play money there and you can upload all you want without draining your actual Linden dollaz on here. So hollah and get those shirts (and other articles of clothing) on. And the plus side is you might find new bugs to report to LL, making SL a happier place for us all.
