Adjusting text position in the gimp?

Hi

I am fairly happy with The Gimp but I am still exploring all its capabilities. The one main thing I am having trouble with is moving text after I enter it. I am happy with adjusting text size and font, but I find that when I select and move some text, it is only its window that moves and the text seems to be left behind. I feel I must be missing something really simple so would appreciate if some one could give me a nudge in the right direction.

if i have to create text in the gimp (which is rare) i make it on its own layer , then move the layer around

is it correct... probally not
does it work .. yea

for text tho i use a vector program like PSP6 serif draw + or inkscape

and just use the gimp for final renderings

Thanks for that. I did a merge and that seemed to glue the text to the layer. Then the text moved with the layer. Great!
