Can anyone post some tips on how to make good hairpieces? So far I've tried to make a fringe from quarter of a hollowed sphere with limited success and then used a slice of a doughnut to make a ponytail... I can see the possibilities but its a bit frustrating - help!

I'd suggest checking out Washu's wig shop in Alua (90, 250)

She has many peices out on display which you can look at and maybe see what you're doing wrong.

I should preface this by saying that I have never made a decent hairpiece, nor do I know much about building :)

I have noticed though that the hairpieces that I like best are not made up of a single prim, like you were trying to use. Rather, they're made up of several prims layered and overlapping to achieve the desired look.

Also, the textures applied to the prims make a big difference, as does the actual hairstyle worn underneath the hairpiece.

I don't know how you're trying to work on your hairpieces, but you might want to make a model of a head close in size and shape to your own to work on too.

I'm not good at describing stuff, but here are some tips.

I like to use cylinder, sphere, ring, and torri/donut prims. I also made an assortment of "hairlocks." Once you made a nice "lock" of hair, you can copy it and arrange it around a root prim.

For me, the root prims are either the size of the head itself or the size of the AV's "brain." And I arrange prims with the intention of tucking the ends underneath the built-in hair the AV's have.

Darn it, Lash. Now I'm gonna have to make a little round textured 'brain' prim and put it inside my Av's head! :D

thats a great idea - to make a dummy head to model the hair on as I found it tricky to line all the bits up on the avatar's head when its moving around. I'll try it right away!

be carefull with the copy prim feature, now the new version of SL handle alpha prim attachment in a less good way, i used to build 200 prims hair pieces (this was very nice and detailed) but now i think doing it isnt possible seriously, if you zoom a bit too closer, it will drop your client fps drastically.
