As I've upset some people I decided to shut the wall down. The debate about copyright has been pretty intense without really coming to any conclusion. To avoid any further disputes about copyright issues I have decided to remake the concept in a way that protects everyones interests. These are my changes: - Textures when added will be matched on creator=adder, all other textures will be deleted. - Creators must "physically" attend the wall to say 'Yes' on sharing their textures. - Creators are not forced to attend the wall to protect their copyright. Default state is always 'No'. - Creators can easily, and at anytime, change from 'Yes' to 'No', or viceversa. Would have been nice for each creator to say Yes or No to every single texture they 'own', but it get's to complicated. So all or nothing. There are some technical issues regarding the first point but I wont bother you with that now. If you have questions or doubts, please ask! Remember, No textures will be displayed/shared unless the creator agreed upon it. Any feedback appreciated!

Woopsy. You can still use the ones I submitted where I am the creator. I understand why you are taking this approach, but it seems pretty severe to me. How about this as an option... When someone gives a texture, if they are not the creator, a dialog pops up and asks, Do you verify that the copyright owner gives permission? If they say no, don't accept the texture. If they say yes, record that somehow (in a list, in the texture description, in an email to yourself). Then, if someday somebody complains, you have a person to send the complainer to. When they resolve their disagreement, you act accordingly. ...and I would still love to have a private copy of the wall It is a GREAT project.

Good idea, thx! Not bullet proof but perhaps fair enough. I'll go with the safest version first and see what people say. Sad but necessary I think. I'm happily accepting any contributions (textures) to the wall. Awesome, thx! And I'll help u setup a copy of the wall at any spot u like. When it's ready that is. I will try to make this version networked so that all textures are displayed on all walls.

Thought I'd post my progress in here as well. A tiny little mouse step has been taken towards the final product: [11:27] Object: Hi Woopsy Dazy! [11:27] Object: You have been here 63 times. [11:27] Object: You're share status is 1. [11:27] Object: Your last visit was 2007-01-25 11:16:05. I'm registering users in a web database. Now onto next step which is the sensor and dialog to say Yes or No. Work, work, work.

I think your changes sound great, Woopsy, and very fair of you. Setting it up so that only the creator of the texture can add it to the wall is an excellent idea. There are still ways people might get around that but you've at least made a good faith effort to ensure that only people who've given their explicit permission to have their work distributed are included. I think that's the right thing to do. I have some that I'll contribute myself.

I have a collection of 174 textures called GNU-this-and-that. I always assumed that these are from the GNU/FSF/Copyleft world, but maybe I am wrong. Anyone know?

As far as I know, there's no way to determine the creator of another object in LSL. How are you planning on checking this?

Latest report. Been a bit lazy lately, or should I say unfocused. Been working some more on the creator-validation and it seems doable. Only I'm afraid of is the massive amount of people in this game. Could be a long list of names to keep track of. Need to save only names that actually said 'Yes' in database. Now, don't tell me it's illegal to save names in a database! Also been testing networked wall and it works. Important to have both the server object and client wall in low lags sim or the give-function can get delayed by several seconds. Normally it works almost as fast as being in the same SIM. All textures has to be stored in one location so people giving textures must be directed to one location. Pity, but only way to do it. On the other hand it can be a good thing, might give us the possibility to do a more detailed categorization. More options to choose from. Back to work. Cya!

WPW grows in complexity
01-30-2007 14:40
Ahhh.... So there will be multiple networked 'viewers', from which withdrawals can be made, but only one central 'bank' into which deposits will be allowed? (Given the inworld tools, this seems reasonable. Since you're using an off world web database, perhaps someday you could allow deposits anywhere, and then update (sync) the in world WPW's on a daily basis?) -------in case you get bored--------- Any chance, in the Version 3 of the WPW, that you could add 'private textures'? I'd like to buy my OWN copy of the WPW to access the Central Bank, AND add those textures which I own, but did not create. As a 'private viewer', only *I* could make withdrawals from it. And as the Version 4 of the WPW, I'd like to be able to sort my personal textures into the same categories as the central WPW... AND, finally, in Version 5, I'd like to share the category SORTING from version 4 with others, but not our textures! LOL. So...If You and I both own texture, 'red tartan', and you sort it into your personal WPW's category for 'Plaid', I'd like MY personal WPW to show 'red tartan' in the Plaid category, as well. {Basically, the result is a collaborative sorting mechanism for the textures we each own. The textures Themselves would not be shared but the sorting 'tags' or 'categories' WOULD be shared. This was the great break through of the original WPW that I found VERY appealing--allowing all of us to communally work to sort our texture inventories.}

From: Sterling Whitcroft Since you're using an off world web database, perhaps someday you could allow deposits anywhere, and then update (sync) the in world WPW's on a daily basis?) Regarding this though. It's not doable today unless you use an avatar that is on-line 24/7. It's not possible to transfer items object to object cross sim. You can however give items to an avatar wherever he/she is in world. One could do a little JETPACK-delivery-prim that flies around and update walls all day but it's not doable today. Can't fly to Islands cross non-land. And then there are other things that make flying object drop dead to the ground because someone filled up their parcel limit when flying over it. And... well. Doable to some extent but not reliable enough. Now save the rest of your ideas and give them to me
