HI,

I have been having this problem a few weeks now.

Everytime I try to save a texture (Full Perms, including ones I even uploaded first to SL) to my computer, Second Life crashes.

I sent Bug Report la while ago and haven't heard a response from Linden Labs so I was curious if anyone else has had this problem?

Maybe there is some setting that I am missing that is causing this?

any help or ideas appreciated.
Thank you.

Hey Jed,

You'd probably have more luck posting this in the technical forum, but chances are you'll want to try something like updating the drivers on your graphics card first. I had a similar problem when I first started and it was due to older drivers for my Nvidia card.

SL crashes every time I do anything, so if for you it's just on downloads, don't sweat it too much. You're luckier than I.

This last version of the viewer is by far the least stable and worst functioning I've seen in my 3 years in SL, and that's saying a lot. If I can give it points for anything, I guess I'd have to go with its predictability. It faithfully crashes every twenty minutes for me. I can't report the crashes though since every time I try, the crash logger crashes too, which is really frustrating. (And yes, I've reinstalled all my drivers, my directX, SL itself, all that jazz.)

Yesterday, I even managed to get the ultimate crash out of the thing, the one where the blue screen of death pops up and says "Windows is now shutting down to prevent damage to your computer." Gotta love that one.

It's been lots of fun meeting project deadlines while wrestling with stuff like that, let me tell you. Hopefully today's update will restore some normalcy. Keep your fingers crossed.

Until you get this bug sorted, a workaround is to use Printscreen to copy the texture. As in, open the texture so that you are viewing it in SL, hit the Printscreen button, and then paste in Photoshop.

Free up some disk space on your main system drive, SL tends to crash if it can't write to the %temp% directory.

Strife, if that suggestion was for me, I appreciate it, but free space can't be the problem. My C drive has 33.5GB free, which is about 60% of the drive. It's only this latest version of SL that's been such a crash monster. In all the previous versions, it did crash every so often, as it wouldn't be SL if it worked all the time, but it was never like this. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that today's update will solve the problem.

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions. They are much appreciated.

Cory,
That is a good suggestion but I have actually had problems updating my drivers.
I have notebook with GeForce 6800 using 70 series Nvidia drivers that are from early 2005 but every time Ive tried to update drivers I get artifacts and/or my system crashes during benchmarking or boot.
Good suggestion, though and I think if I was actually able to update drivers that would help.

Chosen,
thank you for those comments. While they do make me feel not alone, I can't say I feel any better
I hope you have luck sorting out your issues as well :)

Strife,
That is a good suggestion but I have over 180 gigs free out of 200, so the problem is definitely not Hard Drive space here.

Johan,
Thank you. Excellent workaround that I have used =)
Have to crop images in PS of course, but at least it works :)

Chosen, have you tried running it alone. I mean without anything else but essential systems running. It might bve the fact that their isn't enough swap memory for it and your other apps. SL is hoggy and it dislikes other hoggy apps.

Jed, I believe I have the same card in my laptop as well...I know its a 6x series at least, and I've had problems updating them as well - every time I try to install new drivers the card doesn't recognize them and I have to system restore to get the old ones back. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a workaround for that, and I haven't yet tried out the new client version on my laptop, but I will check tonight and see if I have the same problem.

issues issues issues

my issues are loads of crashes all the time ... OH and theres the fun one of teleporting and when I become visible again my hair, shoes, jewelry and any prim attachments ARE ON MY ASS. yes, its a wonderful life

When Im building though, the issue seems to be that SL thinks it knows where my prims should be better than I, and then when im texturing, it changes the textures back and forth for a few minutes before deciding what IT wants the texture to look like. Then if its feeling benevolant, it will allow me to re texture how *I* want. Lastly when im texturing hair, and I need to get the bottom pieces alphs (which is a pain in the ass enough WITHOUT the SL issues ...) I drop the hair, flip it over, texture it, and when I go to put it back on ... BOOM. Crash city

yes .. it has made building a fun experience I must say.

I discovered another workaround that seems to work.

When I goto Save Texture As...

If I do not rename the texture and save as Untitled it doesnt crash SL.

I have to keep saving over the same Untitled though to keep it from crashing.

So after each save, I just open Untitled.tga in Photoshop and rename and resave the texture as .tga and .jpg.

Ive actually managed to save some 10 textures in a row without crashing with this method and this method is quicker than using PrntScrn.

thanx for all the tips.

Cory, ah interesting, Im discovering some problems associated with my particular set-up.
