I bought a skin that is mod, no copy. All I want to do is tune down the make-up (why is it that women's skins have so much eye liner and eye shadow??). I tried to play with the sliders in appearance while wearing this skin, but I see no effect. Since it's no copy, I have to be careful not to ruin the whole thing.
So, how would I get a more natural look (heck, I don' even wear make-up in rl)?

I'm not sure you can. The 'mod' skins I've seen only allow you to modify the skin tone, or the shade of the lip, nail, and eyebrow colors, not the amount of makeup overall.
Tete a Pied has some nice low makeup options.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

If you want a natural skin, you generally have to buy a natural skin. Sorry!
It sure would be good if there was a face layer or two for makeup and tattoos.

Generally you only have to worry about messing up a no copy item if you are editing prims. Some skins are moddable, in terms of the skintone, or the colour of the eyebrows, but as the others have said, you can't modify the makeup on a bought skin, you need to buy one with makeup that you like, or one that includes multiple copies with different makeup options.
