About the only advice I can give for that is stay away from JPEG as your source format, since it's lossy. The others usable formats (TGA, BMP, and PNG) are all lossless. You're going to lose some quality no matter what in the JPEG2000 conversion at upload for anything 256x256 or larger, but the effect is relatively minimal when your source format is lossless.

For 128x128 and smaller, there is a lossless upload option. It's intended to keep sculpt maps clean, but you can use it for any type of image. Again, avoid JPEG as your source.

I have also found that since the conversion tends to blur the image, you might want to apply
the sharpen filter just a tad bit above what you usually would want it to be prior to upload.
I have found that to work pretty well for crisp images.
