How would I go about making a japanese kimono? Would i have to align the art from the upper body and the lower body templates?

You'd need to match between the upper body and skirt templates unless you don't want it to extend below the waist.

I own several nice kimonos that I have purchased. Each consists of several parts.
The top and the skirt are obvious, and yes, they must be aligned fairly well.
The obi (wide sash belt) is usually made of prims, and attached to the waist.
An undershirt and gloves usually form the inner kimono layer, so it looks right.
Add tabi-style socks, sandal-like shoes that show the upper part of the Geta, and use prims for the wooden part of the geta.
Unfortunately, doing traditional styled sleves for a female kimono is next to impossible in SL. You could try to use prims to do the wide, hanging sleeves, but I can't figure out a way to script them so they hang at all right. All Kimono that I have seen in SL just have the top's shirt sleeves set as wide as the shirt template allows, without screwing up the cuff area.
IM me in-world, and I will give you several landmarks to sites where you can buy good-looking Kimonos. Taking a look at how they are done will help you a lot, and some fairly nice ones are as inexpensive as L$50 each. I even know one place you can get a basic kimono for just L$1, though the same merchant sells much nicer ones for L$150 and up.
I have an Asian personna - essentially a Japanese Spirit Fox. I own several very nice Kimonos, so if we can meet in-world some time, I can model them for you, and you can see them before making a purchase.

Just a side note: I did get together with Amaraiel in-world, and gave her a bunch of information. I think she's off to a good start now.
