OK, I've been struggling with this for some time, I can pretty much textures most objects and have it look good, but trying to get a rope say for instance a dock (deck) rope leaves me screming in frustration.

If anyone could give me some pointers ... I've used all objects to try but they do not look right. I've got oddles of the textures. I think mainly I am asking which object is normally used and V H ... I made a hammock for my house, not to be sold - to many nice ones out there - but I have rope from pole to swing and it looks a mess.

Someone showed me this once but apparently the memory IS the first to go.. and I might have been distracted by his flexing arms.. (lol)

This also may help others so I figured why not ask.

Ropes?

Like these?

Just about any cylinder, torus, or section of torus can make a decent rope, and in some cases a textured sphere can pass for a knot.

If you want a simple twisted rope texture, that's really easy. Make a new small image, say 128x64. Add some monochrome noise and a horizontal motion blur to make it look fibrous. Then apply a vertical reflected gradient overlay to make it look cylindrical. If you want to colorize it, add a hue/saturation adjustment layer, and use the sliders to apply whatever color you want. Upload the image to SL, apply it to the round side of a cylinder or torus, and rotate the texture by 45 degrees. Then repeat it vertically a bunch of times (50, 100, whatever you need), and the end result should be a fairly convincing rope.

If you want a braided rope, that's significantly more complicated. I'm a bit short on time today, so I'm afraid I can't write up the steps just now.

One good option is simply to buy a piece of rope at your local hardware store, pull it taught so it's perfectly straight, and then either scan it or snap a good hi-res photo of it. Then just do a little clean-up work in Photoshop to extract it and make it seamless, and you're good to go.
