Hiya all,

I'd just like to know what would be the best size for a 'backdrop' when uploading to SL?

1024 does seem a little on the large size, and I was thinking that 512 might not be quite big enough in order to get a sharp picture.... and I'm pretty sure that realistically it has to be one or the other.

Thanks in advance :)

If those are your two choices, it really doesn't make a difference. SL will automatically resize to 512x512 on upload anyway. That's the maximum upload dimension. You might as well either create your backdrop at that scale or downsize to it yourself.

You should be fine with a quality image that has been resized to 512 X 512, and uploaded to Second Life.

However, there is a trick around this. You can create your image in PS to be 1024 X 1024 and choose 'save as.' In that dialog box, you should see a tick-box that says, 'nearest neighbor.' Click that...this will save the image at a quality of 1024, but at 512...now, I don't know the step-by-step process, or exactly how to describe it...but using 'nearest neighbor' is a way to get higher quality out of smaller dimensions/resolutions.

Check it out.

SL will upload 1024 by 1024 textures at that size. It will not automatically resize to 512 by 512. Though 512 will most likely be the best choice for most things and probably should be used almost all the time as being the largest size to upload..........1024 is a valid option for SL. I use it when detail is very important and 512 or 256 for most everything else.

Ooop.....You're right. What was I thinking? Just too accustomed to making clothing textures, I guess. Sorry about that.
