Calliope, a good suggestion I got from Snark Serpentine is to upload Chip's templates as they are, and wear them on your av. This way, you can see exactly where every line is - very handy for designing skin details and clothing, and only costs you 30L for an invaluable resource you can keep forever!

I hope this helps. :D

Ash's suggestion is a good one. Make a skin out of the template images and wear it, then take a lot of screenshots to use as reference. Off the shoulder collars are extremely difficult to do because of how much the shoulder polygons stretch. I have a skin made from the templates that I'll happily give to anyone who asks if you want to save yourself the upload fees. I'll try and remember to drop one on you next time I get in world.

download the mananequin from SL downloads and go get DAZ|studio.
its free version of poser (in fact the exe file is called poser...hmmm) and will open the mannequin. you can test your outfits there. you have to use tiff file and it does not show the alpha channel (maybe if you render it) for the surface textures but it cheaper then uploading them to SL. it's available for mac and pc.
free is free.

One of the advantages to uploading the textures, however (I think) is that you can see how the UVs move and stretch in game. This is useful because the SL model has some areas that distort quite a bit, and it's worth seeing and considering how this stuff move (like the stretched polygons on the inner thighs and across the ribs in front).

But that's me. And maybe DAZ lets you do that, I don't know. XD Just my cent and a half!

Is there a site where i can learn how to use the SL mannaqin for DAZ|Studio? I can't seem to get it to work.

This is really a great idea. I'm a total beginner at clothing design, I use Chip's templates but my GIMP skills are still pretty inadequate for making anything professional looking. This really helps, though.

I wanted to try to make myself a comfy holey off-the-shoulder sweater, so I uploaded the upper body template this afternoon, and I could see instantly what lines to use. Using that as a guide, I was able to make the sweater in the attached pics. I'm pretty happy with it, as a beginning effort.

Thanks Chip, for the great templates, and thanks Ash and Snark for a really helpful suggestion. :)

That sweater is your first attempt at clothing, Ilianexsi? Great job! You gonna sell it? ;)

Chip, I would love that skin if you could drop it on me. That would be totally tubular! THANKS!

Really well done, especially for a beginning effort.

Thanks! I didn't make the holes myself, though. You'd be amazed at the variety of textures you can find on the net for this sort of thing. :)

Yeah I have been trying to make clothes myself lately.

I can find the source material easy enough but getting them to fit on those damed templates is hard!

Finding the exact line where somethign begins and ends is almost the whole battle though. I spent a week trying to find the exact line were underpants end so they actually fit, and only got "sort of close."

Yeah, I hear ya. I haven't tried the lower body template as a garment yet, but I found the upper one to be extremely helpful in that regard... when I wear it I can see right away what lines to use to make things fit in a certain way. I still need lots of practice, but it helps. :)
