I ask this out of curiosity only, not fully understanding how the SL cache or texture system works. Would it not be good idea to say include a set of textures (partly Linden made and partly comunity made) that would be included with the SL Client and always be imediately availiable for rendering rather then having to stream them?

Nice idea if it were applied on a sim by sim basis. We could use the estate tools to specify a small list of static textures for that sim.

Creating a distinct look for a sim requires custom textures, because the architect/landscape architect is trying to create an immersive sense of place despite the limitations of the platform. This means the textures must be not only visually expressive but also free of distinctive regions that show up as repeaters. For example a texture depicting a charming, eye-catching rock formation looks like wallpaper when applied to terrain or a broad expanse of primwork so you see the same charming, quirky rockform repeated and repeated....

It's much better to craft a custom texture with a distinctive overall look, for example Lauk's 'signature' <-- my term! custom rock on Svarga.

from what i understand the linden textures are streamed too, but since alot of ppl use them the chances of it already being transfered are high
