....full skin template. And how do you save it so its a full skin. I been making skins using the upper/lower/head templates but they save as 3 different items. Is there a full skin template or are these skins made in 3rd party programs and saved as DXL file. If thats the case, how do you upload a DXL file.

All skins in SL are made from three individual textures. You can make creating them a bit easier by using a 3d paint program where you can paint on thet avatar model as if you were working with a single texture but you still need to end up with a head, upper body, and lower body texture to upload and create the skin in SL.

GIMP isn't a 3d paint program, alas.
You can try out Tattoo, It's clunky and simplistic but it's shareware and very inexpensive. It's PC only unfortunately. There's Maxon's BodyPaint 2.5. It has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It's about $800. There's Right Hemisphere's Deep Paint 3D which is around $600. I'm not sure if there's a Mac version. I don't think there is. There's also MeshPaint 3D. This is another shareware app. I'm not sure if it's still being developed but it might be worth a look. As far as I know there's not much else out there unless you want to spend a few thousand dollars. I personally use Cebas's GhostPainter2 which is a plugin for 3ds Max and Photoshop. It's relatively cheap but it requires you to have both max and Photoshop already. _____________________

Theres also ZBrush at www.pixologic.com at USD490. It does more than just 3D painting, including sculpting and molding models like clay.
