From: Michelle Pinkerton I uploaded some textures into SL, when I did that and tried to use them in making clothes the textures looked huge! how can I make the texture smaller in PSP? It's been a while since I've used PSP, but I believe the command is Image -> Resize. Click on the word "Image" at the top of the screen to open the pull-down Image Menu. From there, click on the word "Resize" to open the Resize Dialog. You'll see a window pop up with information about the current height & width of the image, and options to change it. Chip's hi-res tempaltes are 1024x1024 to allow for the high amount of detail he's got in them. Before uploading to SL, you should resize anything you make with them to 512x512, the normal avatar texture size. Keep the resolution always at 72 pixels/inch (standard screen resolution).

Thanks guys What I meant by making the texture smaller is that the texture is too big, when I take a normal texture and load it in the game, when I apply it to clothes the texture is blurry and looks too bi. With building you can put a texture on a block and resize it so that the texture looks better and smaller. I hope I am explaining this better! lol It's hard to explain! thanks again!

If you're using PSP 9, you're probably ok. But I have an older version of PSP which will not load newer PSD files. The solution was that Chip also offers flat .jpg versions of his templates, which were my lifesaver before I finally got my copy of Photoshop.

"Blurry and looks too big" is kind of a vague explanation, could mean anything. I don't want to waste your time again by answering the wrong question twice, so can you post some pics?

Well, I try to explain it better, and later tonite I will post some pics...(at work right now ) So, I make a texture.......512x512, upload it into SL..........Start making a shirt...add the texture and the pattern is too big, what I am wondering is how do I make the pattern of the texture smaller? so that if I made something leopard print, it shows up as leopard print, not as brown and black globs I sure hope that helps!

Mind me for bumping in... but I think I understand what's going on. You get a leopard print texture, and apply it to a shirt, but it's relative size is too big for your avatar. You've got to shrink it and make a pattern of it. I know there are methods for achieving this without the result looking cheesy and repetitive. That way, you get a texture that looks adequately sized in relation to the SL world. Hope that helps in some way..

Hi Michelle!
The short answer to your question about size is no. I'm afraid that there aren't any tools to change the way the textures fit on the Avatars, because the UVs are too complex to allow that. (The UV maps for the other prims all fill their squares; the ones for the AV have empty spots between the polys.)
However, it's fairly easy to see how large the texture is going to look, since the body parts on the template are the acutal bodyparts on the AV. So, if one of the leopard's spots covers half the chest image on the Template, it's going to cover half the chest on the AV.
To fix it, reduce the texture size in the graphics program until it looks right on the body parts.
I'm afraid that I have no idea how to do this in PSP, sorry. I could give you a few suggestions, but I have no idea how, or even if, they will work in your program. But you can probably find a tutorial on the web, if no one answers you here.

Thanks guys! Well after I downloaded Chip's templates, all is good I am still learning by trial and error. but I do have one question.... How would someone make an outfit look more realistic? Example: jeans...for lack of a better question..how do you get those images flat to fit onto the template??? I just hate it when I have a million ideas in my head, and cant figure out how to do it LOL So any suggestions are welcome!!

PSP blind leading the blind lol

Hi Michelle I am learning PSP8 so I think I know how to answer your questions, but I am very new to PSP, so if I say something completely absurd, hope someone will come along and set us both straight lol.
As to your initial question about making textures the right size for the avatar, I am assuming that what you did first of all was to make a square or rectangular textures that wasn't already applied to a garment shape, and that you tried to use it in the in-world clothes making system.
When you choose a fabric in the appearance menu to make a garment, there is no way of resizing it at that stage. It will stretch to fit the garment, and may distort too.
The way to over come that is to apply it to a flat clothes template, like the ones made by Chip Midnight. That way, you can get a pretty good idea of how the garment will look. If it seems that the texture is too big, you can copy the texture, and paste it into a selection. This means that if you decide it would look better half the size, you can make a selection box which is about half the size and paste in the texture, and it will have to squish smaller to fit into the box.
As for your final question...I have been busy finding images of jeans which are laid out for me to be able to paste them over the templates. It is a matter of trial and error, and sometimes retouching to remove blemishes etc. Cali

my 2 cents

The only program I use is psp. My version is psp7. I made objects & stuff for my regular sims for 2+ years. ( if ya wanna see it, it's on a site called With Simlove/Tugger ) Anyhow...
Sometimes a pattern can be "reproduced". For example, a leopard print. This takes patience because each "spot" has to be selected, placed, sized and such to fit the background color. For instance: you find a great leopard print but it's too big, and when you resize it is just dosn't work or making the spots line up along the edge is making you cuss... lol. Start with a background color... say tan... then choose the spots you want and use the lasso and then in the tool box drop down choose either point to point or Smart Edge. Carefully outline the spots you want.... ctrl X then ctrl v to paste to a new image. Now erase all the outside edge you don't want and all the nearly invisable pixels that cause edge discoloration when uploaded. Now paste it to your background. You can use the same spot several times by resizing it and placing them. This method makes it easier to be sure the spots on the edge will match up when you use the pattern on a template.
as for more realistic jeans etc. Finding good pictures to work from THE key here. It's the details that make in-world clothes look their best. Like... the rivets on the jeans or the thickened part of the garment where it is hemmed etc. You can find a great fabric, but if you don't have the details the fabric just looks like someone cut holes in it for appendages.
soooo Finding a picture with clear enough detail for you to use is sometimes hard to do.
Other tips for using psp.... Say you find a GREAT! "OMG I have to make that!" babydoll pj set. But the picture has half the model skewed because of her stance. In SOME cases you can use the best half and duplicate it for the other half.
anyhow.... * smiles* i'm done. Hope something I said had relevance & helped in some way. Good Luck! Z
