disable images in avatar appearance panel?

I'm using what I admit is a machine well below the official specs to fool around with Second Life. I've been having fun these past few days, but I've found that one place my dual-450 Mac really, really grinds to a halt is the avatar appearance panel - it takes a good second or two to generate each of the images shown above the sliders.

Is there any way to turn these preview images off? I know what the sliders do now; I'd be happy with just a bunch of text labels for them.

I don't think there's currently a way to disable the previews, but it'd be nice to have a checkmark box that lets you do so.
