Hi, I am relatively new to SL and enjoying the experience. I have gotten interested in designing simple clothing and would like to thank the unselfish people who have posted tutorials and templates. I have read the tutorials by Nicola, Nephilaine and Linden Labs. I have also, used their templates, alone with the beautiful ones provided by Chris Midnight. I thank each of you and all the posters who have also provided gleams of information.

Now for my question, I have produced some simple logo/design tee shirts and shorts. I have used the alpha channel to cut off the sleeves and pants legs to length. The sleeves have contrasting bands on the ends and the shorts are hemmed.

When I upload the image and put the ‘create the clothing article’ on my AVI, I get long pants and long sleeve shirts, which I then have to shorten. In doing so, the edges are fuzzy; I often I loose part of the darker sleeve banding, due to the white sleeve that extends beyond my Tee’s sleeve.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a limitation of the system?

Are you saving as 32 bit Targa? You need to do that in order for your alpha channel to be uploaded. Otherwise you see white in the area that is supposed to be transparent.

Yes Jana, I am. I am flattening the layers to the ones in use then saving it TGA, 32bit.

If you are using photoshop, it is something that photoshop does to help montage look nice but does it by adding a partial pixel "fringe" to help anti-alias them. Unfortunately, the SL texture "baker" tends to expand the fringe (and everything else) to stretch image around the AV.

There are two fixes, first is to ensure that you have anti-alias turned off when making your selection for the alpha mask. If that doesn't work use the layer>matte menu.

If you are using something other than photoshop, I have no idea how to fix it, but the principle is probably the same.

Thanks, I will try that.

I get the exact same effect making t-shirts in Macromedia Fireworks. Can you explain what layer->matte means so I can try to do the equivalent in Fireworks? Thanks.

You're losing the alpha channel somewhere. Make sure 32 bit targa, and that use alpha channel is selected when you save.

What software are you using?
