I bought a couple of outfits but when I attach them to my avatar, they appear as a picture of the outfit sitting on my head. I'd like to actually wear the outfit. What do I do?

Sounds like they are still in the box. Rather than attach, drag the box out to the ground in front of you. Then, right click on it and edit it. While editing, look at "MORE" then "CONTENTS". The clothing should be found here. Drag the clothing from the contents of your box to your inventory. Once in your inventory, you can wear by either double clicking on it in your inventory, or by dragging it from inventory to your AV.

I can't wear my clothes, either

I was tickled to buy my first piece of clothing, a silver bikini. I attached it to myself and it became a box (with a picture of the bikini) sitting on top of my head...just like Xena's problem, above.
I just tried the suggestion, dragging the box to the ground in front of me. I get a scolding message box: "You cannot create objects here. The owner doesn't allow it."
Did I really buy an item of clothing, or did I buy a PICTURE of an item of clothing?
I'm new, confused, and lost in Linden Space.

Seabunny, you bought the clothes all right. Go to Cordova (The sandbox sim) and then try to follow the above directions. What you tried to do was pull your box out of inventory on land that doesn't allow the creation of objects.
A lot of vendors now do it so the clothing pops right into your folder, to avoid this kind of confusion, but some people still do it the 'old' way.

You don't have to go all the way to the Sandbox. Just wander around and find some land that allows you to rez objects. (Land that forbids objects will show up as a cube in a red circle in your menu bar. When this icon disappears, you're good to go.)

Thanks a lot!
That worked. I wandered around until I found a place without a cube in a red circle. Then I could drop the box in front of me and follow the instructions from Loki, above.
