Please don't jump on me as I'm tech impaired to a degree. BUT I see posts that say use a 512X 512 image or one larger, use multiples of 2 I think it said. How the heck do you do that? During an upload to sl or a dl into your computer or in a software program? Thanks all and be gentle

Thanks all and be gentle Read the sticky thread on File Sizes, Formats, etc. at the top of this forum VERY carefully and in its entirety. Everything you want to know is spelled out in glorious prose, exquisite detail, and with loving patience. Come back and ask if there's anything you don't understand.

Your software for graphics, such as Photoshop, should give you the dimensions of your image in pixels, and should allow you to crop and scale the image as needed. You make the needed adjustments prior to uploading to SL.
The powers of 2 involved are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024, though in practice most images are the values between 32 and 512 from that list. So 512 x 512 is a good size for many textures that have a lot of detail; 256 x 256 is faster to load, but has less datail; 128 x 256 works well for most doors; 32 x 256 might work great for a texture designed to go on a narrow surface, like a table edge; etc...
