Hi, I bought the most ugly parcel of mainland possible, to see what can be done with land, before acquiring something good.

The terrain there is some horrible rock. Basically, I am well aware that on mainland ground texture cant be changed. However, Ive been trying it nonetheless. Ive been messing around with the media section
(right click on the land -> above land -> media). There one can select different textures which are for some video streaming or sth., I dont really understand. But hardly for changing ground texture. And so the ground remained rocky, no matter which texture I had chosen. I also relogged coupla times, which of course, brought nothing. But today I logged in and my land was sandy, even with a bit of gras on the edge. Like this:

Is this some kinda bug? Can anyone expain?

I would relog a time or two more and see if that remains.

As far as I know unless you own a complete sim then you cannot change the terrain texture
whatsoever. What you have there looks like an anomaly to me or rather some sort of base
layer that is possibly showing due to the fiddling of those controls you mentioned, however
I am not sure. It looks very strange to me. Personally I would not want to be stuck with that
look. I guess that your terrain will revert back to the usual over consecutive log ins.

There is a glitch that happens sometimes where your client doesn't render the actual texture for the height, but instead renders the lowest texture for the whole sim on everything. That is what you are seeing, and it is temporary.

I used to manage some sims where I had blue coral sea bottom, then sandy beaches, then grass, and then rock, in that order from lowest to highest. Every once in a while I would log in and see coral all the way to the mountain top. I either had to re-log, or I had to open the terrain textures pane in the Estate tools (even if it was a sim where I couldn't alter those settings). Re-logging or simply looking at the terrain texture choices would usually fix it.

As the owner of less than the whole sim, the only way you can 'change your terrain texture' is to cover it with prims. Parcel owners can't change the terrain texture by any means.
