how i made my jeans I dragged a pair outa my closet and took a bunch of digital photos and made jeans from them for SL I also take photos of buttons and belt buckles and stuff like that for use at a latter date my computer is a mess and it takes now 20 minutes for the folder with all my "just in case' photos to open

Use the starting templates to see how they made their jeans. Then take photos of jeans and then CREATE the jeans in photoshop based on your photos. I actually made parts of the jeans layer by layer and used stitching and bevel and emboss on different layers. Once I hade the final product - I group it and then make a copy of the group and flatten it. This is my final working piece - from there I use adjustment layers to create patterns, colors and different styles using the same jean layer. Also don't forget to create your alpha channel.
I add in buttons and snaps etc, but those stay on a separate layer and aren't affected by any of the adjustment layers.
The only real advice I can give is to try and try and try until it comes out the way you like. You can use the SL previewer (you can find a link to it in the forums) - which works really well when you are trying to create something and don't want to pay for each image to upload to SL.
Another thing to remember is that detail is key - the more details you add (shading, highlites, folds, buttons, ties, stitching etc...) the more realistic and astheticallly pleasing your clothing will be.
