I have been told by many that Gimp will work as an alternative to Photoshop or Paintshop Pro for producing textures for SL. I, however, have never used anything besides Photoshop (which I have come to adore, that's right, adore, I am now officially insane ).

I use gimp for editing exclusively. I hear on these forums that a lot of people think the interface is non-intuitive. I find the same with photoshop. The fact is, they're close enough for someone who knows neither to think they're the same, and different enough that a lover of one will hate the other. Anyway, it handles Alph really well, and can read photoshop files, save as targa and works just as easily in windows or linux. Go to www.gimp.org to find it, and follow the Gimp For Windows links if that's the one you need. Good luck
