Stupid Question

I'm finally trying to do some clothing, and I'm following the guidelines in the "Using the SL Fashion Design Templates" guide, to wit:

From: someone
1. Display the layers you want and don’t display the ones you don’t. (If you’re using an alpha channel, make sure only one is visible.)
2. Open the file menu and select Save As ...
3. Set the format to .TGA.
4. Make sure Alpha Channels is selected if you’re using one.
5. Click the Save button.
6. In the next little dialog choose 32 bits/pixel if you’re using an alpha channel, 24 bits/pixel if you’re not.
7. Be sure not to add any compression (no check next to “Compress (RLE)”).
8. Click OK. Now upload it to Second Life and you’re in business.

And I get... a texture. How do I turn that into an article of clothing? Is there some magical flag that needs to be set to tell SL that it's a shirt and not a tattoo?

You have to create a shirt and then texture it with your new texture.

And "poof", new shirt. :)

A little tip before you upload: The Preview Feature is your friend. It is very helpful and will save you lots of Lindens on upload. ;)

I can see where you got confused with this, I was doing the same thing.

While following some tutorials I have seen screenshots of the preview window actually showing the shirt as it should look. But on my side when I would upload the texture it was completely flat and square! I eventually figured out I still needed to make the shirt, then texture it.

What I dont get is why some clients actually show the shirt in the preview as it should look, or maybe I have just totally missed something, I dont know hehe.

Once I actually figured it out and made my shirt and put it on, I was surprised at how easy and gratifying the whole process was. Too bad I couldnt make shirts look that good in RL, LOL.

There's a dropdown list of display modes on the previewer. The default is flat but you have choices for male or female head, torso, and legs also.

Oh, one other thing. When you're using the previewer in a mode other than flat, the regular keyboard shortcuts for rotate and zoom work inside the preview window. :)

Sorry to get off subject a bit. But I've been playing with the templets as well but I can't seem to get my transparent areas to show as that in SL. Does saving as the .tga elimnate that?

I've been saving as jpj and did everything to the background I could think of to make it trasparnent and it allways shows up as white where I need it to be nothing.

With PS7+ You have to make sure of 2 things first that you have it checked to save as background transperient and that you save as 32 bit or it will change white.

That looks like it will work when I save it as a gif. I can't seem to save them as TGA's either .. so it's jpgs I'm working with.

You need to create an actual alpha channel when using TARGA to get transparency. It isn't enough to tell the background to be transparent.
