How do make objects look metallic?

Hello all :-)

I gave a friend of mine a black box and somehow, I have no clue or idea how he did it, gave the entire surface a metallic finish. As if it was made of metal instead of wood. Can anyone tell me how I can go about doing this? Is there a special feature in Edit I have to access, or is there an item I must pocess that would enable me to alter surface finishes?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Without knowing if he changed the texture at all, I'll go on the assumption that he did not. In the edit menu, on the texture tab, there is a drop down menu that says "shiny" or something like that. It's to the left of the bumpmap drop down. Play with that and see if you can recreate what he did. I'd almost bet that's the setting he changed.

Edited to add: Shiny and bumpmapping are both client side renders, meaning if the person looking at the box has them turned off in the preferences, they will still see just a black box, without the shiny metallic look or the bumpmap features, if you use them.

On edit, textures, another drop down menu is usually set to 'wood'. You can click on 'metal' and then go to 'bumpiness' and there is another drop down menu with lots of choices, amongst which are 'metal' I believe, and you can also increase 'shininess' on another drop down menu. The effects are faint but noticeable.

I did try setting out a row of black cubes with differences on each one, which is a worthwhile exercise!

Best wishes from Ainee Kohime.

To look like shiny metal, set texture to blank and set shininess to maximum.
