weird hair textures

I made some hair and I notice that from a distance ( not very far,only about where another person might be standing) it looks as though I have bald patches and also the ends of the torus' inside my head are visible. When I look close up it looks perfect. What causes this and is there way to fix it? Im not using alpha textures.
