I have added a new video tutorial to the SLuniverse Knowledge Base that shows how to take an existing image and make part of it transparent in Paint Shop Pro. The tutorial is a Flash video, and is available here:

http://www.sluniverse.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10218

It has full playback controls at the top of the movie so you can pause and go back or forward, and will work in any browser that supports Flash.

(I started another thread though, so as not to hijack this one.)

Not to complicate matters, but...

You can actually skip the "make new mask" step. When you have your image all cut out, do a select all instead of select none, then in Selections go to Load/Save Selection, then select Save As Alpha Layer (I believe. It's reflexive to me, and I'm not at my own computer right now to double check the exact wording).

Reitsuki,

The mask produces smoother alphas, and will automatically select transparency across all layers, and even do partial transparency. It is a much superior method for creating alphas that Save Selection is.

Hmmm.

Interesting. I know with my technique you do have to flatten all visible layers to make it work, but I've never had any issues with quality of the resulting layer or with partial transparency.

The flatten step alone is reason enough not to use the save selection method. I have found that using source opacity as opposed to the selection tends to make the edge crisper and less likely to have the halo effect. The save selection option does work, I just prefer not to have to flatten my image.
