HIyas Everyone, I haven't used GIMP that much but after finding the plugin repository, I'm going to try and switch over from PS. I see a "Sticky" for PS but really nothing for GIMP. I'm sure I can figure out most things but what I'm interested in are the plugins/scripts available for GIMP. What are the "must haves" for GIMP and what are some good links? Thanx

1,000's out there. Good place to start is the GIMP plug-in registary at http://registry.gimp.org/Also, the latest GIMP, versions 2.6 onwards, can use PS brushes with no conversion. Suggest you join Deviant Art for a great selection of brushes. I've been a GIMP'er for 3 years and love it. P.S many people on Vista have had issues with 2.6.5 so if it happens to you just use V2.6.4

Has gimp fixed their half-baked handling of text yet?

Nope, no need for the PS plug-in in the later versions. Text. Better than pre-2.6 but still a weak point. Least it now has bounding boxes and wrap. 2.8 is the schedule for the major re-vamp of the text tool. Guess it's one of those features you grow to love/hate...bit like SL

The problem I have with text in Gimp is that if you resize the text layer it bakes the text to a bitmap instead of resizing the text layer parameters, so if you need to modify the text it has to throw out the layer changes.

There are 2 versions of the Layer Effects plugin... a script-fu version and a Python version. I can get the script-fu version to work but I want to use the Python version because it has preview. I have placed the .py file in the scripts folder and in the plugins folder (not at the same time) but I don't see it it GIMP. I have Python 2.6 installed for running Blender (on WinXP). Anything in particular I need to do to get the .py to work in GIMP?

I found this link to setup GIMP for Python-Fu (WinXP)... Unfortunately, after uninstalling GIMP(2.6.6) and Python(2.6) and reinstalling Python(2.6) and PYCairo, PYObject, and PYGtk for Python 2.6, the GIMP installer still won't recognize Python being installed to get to the Python Extension checkbox. Anyone else have probs installing GIMP with the Python Extension?

Seems that GIMP has quite a few bugs; too many for me to use as an alternative to PS. That didn't take long... lol

I don't use Python BUT I did come across this on Deviant a few weeks ago though never got around to trying it. http://photocomix-resources.deviantart.com/art/Gimp-Python-support-easier-74889017(Did just read that Python is disabled by default when GIMP is installed. Says you need to do a custome install and tick the Python box so it will be recognised)
