Hi all I have just started making my own textures using photoshop, and have found a lot of the work I have created as backgrounds for digital scrapbooking may translate well as fabrics.. I would love some input from those of you who are more experienced in these matters, as the grid is down and I cannot upload.. would somone mind taking a look at this and and telling me if they think it would work well as cushion/upholstery/clothing texture? Your critique much appreciated! I am looking at the 256x256 - that seems to be the size of choice... so as to converting the image so that it looks to scale - well I havent even thought about that ?!? http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a158/flamelily/purplegeo.jpgThanks

I agree that is a fab look. You might want to consider ..not sure if this will work on this one...making this seamles so you can better play with the repeats and such on fabrics. Looks like you're on your way to a funky beginning.

I agree with Carson. It looks pretty good, but it would be a lot more useful if it were able to tile. For the pattern you've got, that's a tall order though.
Aside from that, my only other criticism is that perhaps the highlights are a little overblown. I'm not sure if it's my familiarity with how these things are composited getting in the way, or if it's really an obvious flaw, but to me, it looks a bit too much like a cloth overlay on a flat painting, rather than a pattern actually painted onto cloth, if that makes sense. Losing the white streaks, would probably go a long way toward making it look more convincing.
Overall though, it looks good.

I am working on the seamless.. going to be tricky with that pattern, but will try! And I now have the great links for seamless, which is giving me heaps of ides for other textures... something I am struggling with is the effect of the paint going onto of the fabric, rather than the other way around, Chosen Few, if you read this post again could you point me in the direction of tutorials? I have been studying real fabric scans, and there seems to be a highlight on each little texture bump.. do you think if I created a new texture layer, with a pale colour and then blended that with my pattern, so that I had the effect of highlights? Advice much appreciated!

The canvas overlay you have on this makes tiling hard and vanishes when downsampled to 256x256.
The underlying geometry is good, and there is not much low frequency luminosity changes so tiling should not be too hard. Drop the canvas, tile, and then if you must, the photoshop denim gives a better fabricy feel than canvas (or was that burlap?).
Good luck.

in the gimp there is a script that makes images tilable, but it overlaps the image over itself to look that way. so your fabric won't look exactly like that...i'll try to upload an example for you sometime soon. i've been playing around with fabric designs all in the gimp....in the gimp you can take an image and save it as a pattern and then see how it looks when it tiles...and paint with your original pattern. it keeps all of the pattern tiles in a window so you can pick them out whenever you want to use one. it's very fun.
