Is there a way to create a "facial tattoo" that doesn't requore a new skin (ie, works like an overlaying layerm like clothing?) I'm trying to prep some face painting for Hallow'en and need some advice on that.

I once made a facial tatoo with a single prim. If you shape it right, it'll turn out fine.

Other then that I'm not sure, perhaps talk to the skin-maker?

I believe it goes on as a texture. Like the "Makeup textures." You need SLs facial template to make them :)

But in order to wear it your skin has to be mod. I guess that`s why facial tats are so rare, I know that`s why I dont make them; not many modifiable skins.

The short answer is, NO.

The long answer is, if you are happy wearing the default Linden skin, then the head can accept 1 texture layer which you would use in a newly created skin body part (right click in your inventory, create new body part -> skin) to create your halloween face or custom makeup.

If you are wearing a bought skin however, then the short answer remains true. The face is the one part of the body that accepts only 1 texture layer, which is used for the skin, so no further overlays are possible. The only way to change your face or make up is to change your skin.

I hope this clarifies things for you.

Joannah Cramer does in fact sell mod skins as she sells her makeups as seperate face textures which you swap out as you wish, but as I said in my previous reply, your own "tattoo" texture would completely replace the existing face, not overlay it.

For a completely painted halloween face this might be a solution, but creating your own makeups for her skins is not a very viable option as matching the skintone tone & texture so as to avoid a seam around the neck would be nigh on impossible.

Yay, i got plugged <3

For the record, as long as tattoo is provided as texture which matches shape of standard AV face template (black and white pictures work perfectly well and can be sent easily in-world) ... combining it with the base skin texture and optionally merging into standard skin file is matter of maybe 10-15 mins of work, so i'd guess it's something most skin makers would do if asked, unless maybe if they're very very popular and swamped with work as it is... for smaller tatttoos if this turns out not possible, then mentioned single prim properly shaped and positioned and textured with tattoo texture that makes all but tattoo area transparent... could likely work quite well, too ^^;;
