Making Alpha Channel with Wrinkle Layer

I am new to making clothing and have been reading the tutorial on making wrinkles. Ok, so I have the layer with the wrinkles & shading to put on top of my clothing and I'm ready to make the alpha. I made a layer and filled it all up with 50% gray and then made my wrinkles. So now, I have 2 layers that need to go together to make my alpha channel - my clothing layer and the wrinkle layer that is a fully gray... do I need to get rid of the extra gray somehow? And do I need to merge these 2 layers before I try to make the transparency? I've tried selecting both layers and then followed the tutorial for making the alpha - but I'm not having any luck. I hope someone understands my problem and can help me. =)

Set the layer with the gray on it to "Multiply".

It's on the layers pallet. Select the grey 'wrinkles' layer in the layers pallet, and there's a pull-down menu with choices like "Multiply", "Screen", "Lighten"... each does a different effect between the two layers.

Multiply a white field with a 50% grey triangle over a colored picture, and the area under the picture is 50% darker. White is unchanged, black becomes black, and shades of grey between darken.

I am still having the worst time finding step by step instructions on how to make an alpha channel for the top I have created with a separate wrinkle layer. I can make the alpha just fine when I am working with just the clothing piece layer alone... but now I have 2 layers I need to somehow combine and make into an alpha channel - my halter layer and the wrinkle layer that goes on top of it. Can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial that will tell me exactly how to do this? please? Been struggling for over 24 hours with this, lol. =)

If the wrinkles are within the area that will be white on your Alpha Channel, then they will show up just as your shadings, details and such on other layers.

Kat, just make the alpha in the shape of the shirt as you normally would. The shape is all that's important. Whether or not you have wrinkles or polka dots or little yellow duckies & bunnies on the fabric is completely irrelevant. Those details have nothing to do with transparency, so they have nothing to do with the alpha channel.

Oooh, I figured out my problem and it's working now. I was forgetting the step where I'm supposed to fill in the outline of the top with white when making the alpha channel. I am such a dork!

Thank you all for putting up with my questions! =)

I wonder if anyone knows how to set multiply option in Gimp? I cheap cheap cheap, and can do most shading without this method, but I sure would like to use it.

GAH! I just found it! Asked for help too soon! Anyway, any Gimp Users, sounds basically the same as photoshop. Layer Dialog, pulldown menu that say mode. Your probably found it already, its awfully obvious now that I found it.
