I think I understand the basics of shaping and linking the prims but I haven't yet figured out how to turn these into something my avatar can wear. How do I accomplish this?

you make these items based on attachment points. Like for example on the arm are 3 points: upper arm, forearm, and hand. Each part attaches separately.
What you can do is form the item then attach, then you can edit the item while it's worn.
One trick I did was link 9 scattered primitives, attached the group, then built up the attachment by grabbing the floating linked items. I move each prim into place and formed it on-site.

I can't find anything about attachment points while trying to do what you suggested. How do I attach a prim to an attachment point? I'm gonna keep trying.

There are a couple of ways. You right click the prim/object in question, choose more then attach then the location you want to attach it to from the pie menu when it's rezzed in world. Alternatively you take it into inventory and right click and choose attach to and the location from the list.
The second option has the benefit it shows you what you've already got attached where.
There's probably a third way, you edit the object, then go to the edit menu and choose attach object and choose the location. Again that gives you the full list of points and what's attached where I think. Never used this one though.
Once an object has been attached you can simply choose to "wear" it in future as it remembers where it was attached. I'm not sure if relinking it destroys that memory, but it seems quite likely.

as long as when you de-link then re-link you use the same prim as your base prim it will still recall where it was told to attach!
you can morph/torture it all you want, but if you delete it then its memory is gone..
