Hi Gang, I'm fairly new and have come from There.com where I have learnt fast whilst in SL the method of designing clothes is completely different. Anyway I downloaded the templates and began to follow this tutorial http://nicolaescher.com/tutorials.php recommended by live help. So I start on making my top and it tells me to open layed UV Map I go to layers see every single other layer mentioned in the tutorial except the UV Map. Whats with that? I'm using Adobe Photoshop. It seems this UV Map layer is needed as a base to start off so I can't really do anything till I have that layer. I assumed it would of come with all the templates I downloaded from the SL download page, after all every other layer was available with it. Can anyone touch on this? - Confused Newb

Hi Pixie The UV layer is in the LL templates but it's turned off by default. It's also very faint and difficult to see even when it is turned on. The UV layer simply shows the polygons of the avatar mesh. There are replacement templates that are much easier to use than LL's. You can find my custom templates here and another excellent set by Robin Sojourner here.

If you download the template package as a whole, the templates include more layers than when you download each one seperately. I'd spoken to LL about this in the past, and they said they'd fix it, but maybe they haven't. I haven't checked in a while. Anyway, download the complete package, and every template will include all layers, including UV maps and sample clothing.
That having been said, by all means also do as Chip said and get ahold of his templates and Robin's. Both are high-res with subdivided UV's to make things like seam-matching a bit easier. I'd recommend starting with the basic LL ones though, just to learn the ropes, and then upgrade to the more detailed ones when you're ready.
