Hi,

Trying to you CS3 Extended's 3D object import to create textures for the avatars. I can open the SL_Avatar objects as a layer but they do not have textures mapped to them and it seems CS3 will not let me assign any to it so it looks like I need to get an OBJ that already has the head, upper and lower body templates mapped onto it before loading into CS3. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

I have Maya Personal Edition but don't know it well enough yet. I am opening to get any tool I need if there is something that really does this great. I read about one tool called UVMapper, seems like it may do it.

thanks for any help.

i assume that you are trying to use ps to make clothes or skins...

uv mapper will not help you any more than maya and as far as i know you cant use the free version very well to do anything useful

search for my thread under maya avatar textures and it might help you figure out how to load
textures in maya, although you will probably need some tutorials (you just have to do some homework) to help you do anything with them from there, good luck......there isnt much other way to learn maya...than to start reading

as for the cs3 thing... every time i have tried to load an obj i end up with a blank screen
at any rate i believe that you cant paint directly on the avatar anyway
you still have to edit on a flat texture....thats what i hear i could be wrong...
the templates are called uv template and they should be imbedded in the obj that you opened in ps...so this is prolly not your problem

one tip i will give you...

when you open maya go to

file/project/new project/....name whatever you want
then
file/save scene as/ ....name whatever you want

do this everytime you open maya
this way you know where your files are going
otherwise, you might never find them

if you want to open something...
go to
file/project/set project/ ...name of thing you want to open

then
file/open scene/...name of scene you want to open

good luck
